Homemade Vanilla Extract Recipe
As we make more and more from home this year, one thing I wanted to try was to make our own extracts. It’s surprisingly easy, and it makes you wonder why you’re paying so much for it at the store!

I made two types of vanilla and made sure I used the glass jars from Le Parfait that Glass is Life sent me. Your homemade vanilla will sit in these jars for months, or even years so you will want to make sure your containers wont change the taste as they go. Glass will keep your vanilla flavor true, and will keep it fresh for months and years to come.

I made two types, traditional Vanilla Extract and Rum Vanilla Extract. In both cases be sure your alcohol is 40% alcohol, clear and not flavored – unless you want to do a compound flavor. The Rum Vanilla Extract will give your recipes a different flavor profile and is a lot of fun!

Vanilla Extract Ingredients:

  • 1 cup 40% Vodka
  • 6 Vanilla beans

Directions:

  1. With a sharp knife cut your vanilla beans in half. Carefully slit them down the center leaving the tops together and add your cut beans into your jars.
  2. Add in your vodka and close the top to your jar tightly. Shake your mixture together.
  3. Place your extract on a shelf in a dark place. About once a week, remove it and shake it again.
  4. In one month you will have vanilla extract you can use in your recipes. In two months you will have full flavor vanilla extract.

For either version, just change the alcohol type below to make your type of choice. This recipe is easily adaptable for cinnamon extract, coffee extract as well – just change the vanilla beans out for an equal amount of spice of your choice!

The best part about these extract recipes- they’re virtually bottomless. As you use your extract top off with the same liquor of your choice. Shake and repeat the process. You can add more beans as you go as well. Easy peasy and has a fantastic flavor as well!

Where to find Vanilla beans? You can go to your bulk food store and buy them – but I found our store only had 2 packs for $8. That is not in my budget, and wouldn’t make this affordable. Instead I ordered a quarter pound on ebay, but you can find them on Amazon as well. Try to order Grade B Vanilla beans, they have a lower moisture content and will not water down your vanilla.
