I love making cupcakes, they’re is just something about them that always makes me happy. They don’t always come out 100% like I had hoped (like these guys), but they taste fantastic and always bring a smile to people’s faces. Last weekended we hosted a Disney Kids party thanks to Disney Parks, HP, Soft Soap, and Pillow Pets. The part was for the youngest friends and family members we have – Preschoolers! So when I set out to make cupcakes, it was my goal to make fun ones they would enjoy – plus anyone can do at home.
Every time I look at these cupcakes I laugh – partially because the frosting is still swirly and wouldn’t smooth out no matter what I tried (it actually made it worse when I tried to use my spreader). But they’re goofy and make you want to say “The Claaaaw” whenever you see them! I did give each one their own personality when I made their faces, but making them was actually really easy to do and you probably have most of what you need at home already!
What you need:
- Your Favorite Cupcake Recipe (We used a gluten free chocolate cupcake!)
- Buttercream Frosting (recipe below)
- Cupcake liners
- Candy Eyes
- Green Airheads (watermelon flavor! Yum!)
- Green Food Coloring – We used Electric Green Food Gel
- Black Food Coloring – We used Wilton Black – They even have a Toy Story Color Set!
- A Piping Bag or zip top bag with the corner cut to the right size
Directions:
Step 1: Prepare your cupcakes according to recipe or package directions – It’s more than ok to use a boxed mix! Allow to cool completely.
Step 2: Prepare your buttercream frosting!
Ingredients:
- 8 oz of room temperature butter
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 2-3 Tbsp Milk
- 4 cups Powdered Sugar + Additional
- Food Coloring
Instructions:
- In your stand mixer add in your butter and vanilla. Slowly integrate your powdered sugar.
- Add milk and powdered sugar until you reach the consistency you want for your frosting.
- Add in your Green Food coloring and pipe the base on all of your cupcakes. You should have some frosting left in the bowl!
- Add in your black food coloring to remaining frosting and mix until you get the desired darkness. Add the mouths to your cupcakes.
Step 3:
Add your eyes and ears to the cupcakes! Admittedly, the eyes are easy enough – just make sure you add 3 to each cupcake.
We used the mini-green airheads to create the ears and the antennae for our aliens. Each mini-airhead made enough for 2 aliens. Simply tear off a piece and shape it by hand. The ears are a quick point and the antennae is sort of shaped like a golf tee.
Add on your parts and look at how cute they are!
Ok – so, they aren’t the prettiest things I’ve ever made, but guess what – the kids love them and that’s all that really matters. They’re a bit silly, but isn’t that part of the fun ;).
