The Spongebob Movie Sponge on the Run Review

Fans of SpongeBob, Squidward and Patrick Rejoice! The crew is back in a fun new animated movie. This time, though, their animation is updated to a fun 3D animation style and they’re off on a new adventure to save SpongeBob’s pet snail Gary who has been snailknapped by King Poseidon in order to use his snail slime to stay looking young forever!

But let’s talk about that animation a little bit here. The 3D animation in the film is still done in front of a two dimensional background. This gives the film some depth but also makes sure that it doesn’t stray too far from the original material. But making SpongeBob and actual sponge like material does lead to a couple gag moments they’re able to take advantage of. But the animation almost seems like it’s just on the edge of 3-D but not pushed far enough.

On their quest to save Gary, the crew ends up on an adventure of a lifetime as they make their way to The Lost City of Atlantic City. Meeting some bad guys and foes along the way, as well as a Sage Tumbleweed (Keanu Reeves) who randomly appears to help them along the way. It’s a goofy bit and of course with SpongeBob and Patrick there’s mixed results if his advice is actually followed.

The Spongebob Movie Sponge on the Run Review

There are some extreme moments in the movie like when SpongeBob and Patrick are put on trial for execution for trying to steal Gary back. This may lead to more questions than it’s worth. Another scene has Spongebob and Patrick battling pirates and vanquishing a bad guy – and saving the day. The movie, much like the show in general seems to be all over.

So should you see The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run? If you’re a fan of the series – absolutely! It’s definitely geared younger, but does have jokes in it that only older audiences will pick up on. Even if you’re not a fan of the series or you don’t know the characters well – you can watch this movie and enjoy it. The movie plays out more like a long episode, and knowing the back story of any character isn’t really required in order to enjoy the film.
