WE ARE PAT | in NYC Theaters Now

Following a critically acclaimed debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2025, Rowan Haber’s  delightful documentary We Are Pat will begin an Academy Award-qualifying theatrical run on May 29 in New York, with screenings in Los Angeles, Chicago and nationwide this summer. Tribeca Films, the distribution label from Tribeca Enterprises and Giant Pictures, will release We Are Patdigitally on June 23rd.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Rowan Haber (FX’s Pride,  Stonewall Forever, New Deep South, and Braddock, PA), and produced by Caryn Capotosto (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Little Richard: I Am Everything), the film examines one of the most loved, hated and misunderstood characters in comedy.

Created by Julia Sweeney in the 90s, “Pat” became a phenomenon on SNL before facing cultural backlash as conversations around transness and non-binary identity politics evolved. What starts as a pop culture excavation becomes something deeper: a reflection on gender identity, the elasticity of comedy, the ethics of authorship, and what happens when a joke outlives the era it was born in.

Reflecting on her participation in the filmJulia said, “I was interviewed over several years for this documentary, never knowing if it would be sympathetic or problematic.  Much like Pat, Pat-self, the documentary holds both at the same time. It is so much deeper and richer and more provocative than I ever imagined. And funny. Really, really funny.”

As Haber explains, “I was interested in what happens when you don’t try to resolve a cultural artifact, but instead reopen it and see what’s still alive inside it. We Are Pat  uses comedy to sit in that tension, inviting trans comedians to reshape something that once excluded them and ask whether we can laugh at what was meant to laugh at us, and maybe rewrite those harmful narratives in the process.”

As hilarious as it is endearing, the film features a who’s-who of trans comics tasked with the ultimate challenge – creating a new 2025 Pat sketch in an all-trans writer’s room. The film features interviews with  Julia Sweeney, Kevin Nealon, Molly Kearney, Abby McEnany, Murray Hill, Nori Reed, Robin Tran, Sabrina Wu, Roz Hernandez, James Tom, Ally Beardsley, JD Samson, River Gallo, Riv Butcher, Grace Freud, April Clark, Ever Mainard, Hayden Johnson, Brontez Purnell, and Jules Gill-Peterson.Executive Producer Alan Cumming sums it up when he said, “Under Rowan Haber’s assured direction, the film honors the past while cheekily re-writing it, delivering wit, warmth and the last laugh.”

The team behind WE ARE PAT  includes standout talent from both the documentary world and legendary queer artists behind the camera: Directed by Sundance Fellow, Tribeca  & Webby award winner Rowan Haber Produced byEmmy winner Caryn Capotosto p.g.a. and  Rowan Haber p.g.a. ; Executive Producers Emmy winner &NY Times Bestselling Author Alan CummingTony award winning film and theatre producer Adrian SalpeterBill & Ruth Ann Harnisch – The Harnisch Foundation, Jenny Raskin,Geralyn White Dreyfous J WinkelriedPierre HauserRebecca Lichtenfeld Chandra JesseeMarci Wiseman ,Daniel J. PREMARITAL | Available On DEMAND June 2nd

This is Robert’s first feature film, an effort which he built up to after spending his 20s working in commercials in Los Angeles. Robert got his start making home movies while passing time in the long shapeless days of midwestern homeschooling. Along with that free, untethered lifestyle came the paradoxically rigid structures of conservative religion. When you’re encouraged to explore your “God-given” creativity and plumb the depths of human experience, but at the same time your own personal experience is itself aggressively repressed, let’s just say it saddles you with a philosophical tension you can never quite shake. But you can laugh about it. Eventually. After a lot of therapy.

LOVE LETTER | Premieres in Theaters Beginning June 5th

A defining voice in contemporary Japanese cinema, Shunji Iwai has long been celebrated for his lyrical storytelling, emotional precision, and quietly radical influence on global filmmaking. Emerging in the 1990s as one of the most original talents of his generation, Iwai crafted a cinematic language that fused music, memory, and melancholy into something wholly distinct, capturing the inner lives of youth with an intimacy that resonated far beyond Japan.

Iwai’s 1995 breakthrough Love Letter, called “the greatest sentimental story ever told” (Asian Movie Pulse), starred Miho Nakayama in a dual role and became a bonafide pop culture phenomenon throughout Asia and beyond, and this June, Film Movement Classics presents the cinematic touchstone in a new 4K restoration for the very first time in North America.

In LOVE LETTER, two years after the sudden death of her fiancé in a mountaineering accident, Hiroko Watanabe (Nakayama) remains unable to let go of the past. On the anniversary of his passing, she discovers his childhood address in an old school yearbook and, on impulse, sends a letter addressed to him—never expecting a reply. But one arrives, from a librarian named Itsuki Fujii, who once knew him and shares not only his name, but an uncanny connection to his past. As the two women begin an intimate correspondence, their letters gradually uncover long-buried memories of the man they both loved in different ways. Through recollections of adolescence in snowy Hokkaido, fragments of first love, and moments left unspoken, a fuller portrait of Itsuki emerges — one shaped as much by absence as by memory.

The restoration of LOVE LETTER will be shown in select theaters with Iwai’s ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU CHOU celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2026. A haunting coming-of-age drama, ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU CHOU follows a group of disaffected Japanese teenagers navigating the alienation and cruelty of adolescence in the early internet age. At its center is Yuichi, a shy, bullied 14-year-old who finds solace in the ethereal music of elusive pop star Lily Chou-Chou, a Bjork-like chanteuse whose epic music is lush and transcendent. Yuichi only lives for Lily Chou-Chou’s big Tokyo concert, where the lies and violence can be washed away by the presence of his goddess and her powerful music. But fate has yet another obstacle in store for Lily’s devoted fan. Blending lyrical imagery with raw depictions of youth violence, Iwai crafts a deeply unsettling portrait of adolescence, where music offers fleeting transcendence in a world defined by loneliness, cruelty, and the fragile search for meaning.

ENONGO | Premiering Exclusively on IndiePix Unlimited on June 19th

What does it mean to be a Black woman rapper, a Cornell Ph.D. candidate, a teacher, and a proud nerd — all at once? ENONGO sets out to answer that question with honesty and style.

An award-winning animation-documentary hybrid from Director Kevin Schreck, the film follows Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo — known as SAMMUS — as she tours North America, records a new album, and navigates a full-time music career alongside academic life. With her autobiographical, afrofuturism-inspired music, she tackles mental health, identity, race, gaming, and feminism, earning a devoted following that spans activists, hip-hop heads, punks, and proud geeks alike.

The film blends vérité footage with hand-drawn animation created entirely by an all-Black women team — the first in the history of feature filmmaking — bringing to life the interior world behind the public persona: the Ithaca upbringing, the years teaching in Houston, the return to Cornell, and the music that threads it all together.

Intimate, empowering, and wholly original, ENONGO is a story of survival, artistic creation, and a woman who consistently, defiantly, thinks outside boxes.

ANIMALS IN WAR | Premiering on VOD/Digital/FM+ on June 26th

Inspired by true stories, Animals in War is a feature anthology film created by Ukrainian filmmakers in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Featuring Oscar winner Sean Penn alongside a collaboration of Ukrainian and international artists, the drama tells seven independent stories united not by narrative, but by a shared emotional and ethical space.

Through a range of visually arresting artistic styles — blending observational realism with poetic imagery, and at times approaching allegory and fairy tale — war’s destruction comes into focus not through soldiers or battles, but through the animals caught in its wake. A white rabbit, a wolf, a cow and other creatures, both domestic and wild, become witnesses, companions, and sometimes the only reason to survive as cities empty, frontlines shift and the world is instantly reshaped by violence.

War here is portrayed not as spectacle, but as a humanitarian and ecological catastrophe. Children forced to grow up overnight, adults living with loss, and people under occupation making impossible decisions all find themselves bound to animals under the pressure of conflict. Yet alongside the devastation, ANIMALS IN WAR reveals tenderness, moral choice and the enduring power of compassion — a haunting yet deeply moving plea for global awareness, reflection and action.
