BY HOOK OR BY CROOK playing theatrically and digitally across the U.S. in June @ Alamo Drafthouse & Criterion Channel

Groundbreaking when it was made and still fiercely innovative today, BY HOOK OR BY CROOK is a buddy film that chronicles three weeks in the life of a handsome, gender-bending, small town dreamer with a nagging messiah complex. Emotionally defeated after the death of his father, SHY heads to the big city to sink himself into a “life of crime.” He is quickly distracted by VALENTINE, a deliriously expressive, wise-acre adoptee on a misguided search for his birthmother. The two freaky grifters join forces and learn the true meaning of “poise under pressure” in this visually stunning and wonderfully acted, anti-authoritarian tale of friendship, trust and redemption.

Said co-director Silas Howard, “When we made By Hook or By Crook we had no idea the film would go on to become an iconic mainstay of queer cinema. We were young artists who wanted to make something representative of us and our culture. We didn’t see people who looked like us—gender non-conforming and trans folks—in mainstream media and we knew waiting around to get permission to be seen was futile. So we just said, fuck it. Let’s tell our own story.”

“One thing we did with that film that I think was ahead of its time – back then surely, and still is today – is that we didn’t explain ourselves to anyone, we were non-binary and didn’t justify our characters’ gender expressions and experiences or define it to the audience. We wanted to make a film about a third gender, which is where I felt I personally lived, at the time,” continued Howard.

Said co-director Harry Dodge, “This year, the film’s 21th anniversary, is an interesting cultural moment. Miraculously, the film is still utterly relevant! Much has changed in terms of LGBTQI visibilty, representation and rights, and so obviously the meaning and intervention the film makes has likewise transformed. In 2002 By Hook or By Crook refused to explain or label the “identity” of these characters, instead diving deep into the specificity of their odd details. By making something nuanced, from the inside, by refusing to oversimplify for expediency the film manages to create different positive ways to talk about self-representation and signification in mass media, and to question (with nuance) monolithic notions of queer identity, reminding us that people experience identity in thousands of very personal, very particular, often philosophical ways.”

Said producer Steak House, “This film is an absolute testament to the power of making radical underground queer art no matter what anyone tells you that you can or cannot do.”

AMERICONNED- NYC/LA/Major city theatrical release June 9th with US/Canada VOD release to follow

AMERICONNED is a film about income inequality in the US and the tragic destabilizing effects to Americans. Radical inequality has led to radicalization at every level of society, and this powerful documentary depicts what happens when America hits its tipping point by looking back through our history at similar critical moments of instability. The labor movement of the past was born in times like these. We must restore the path to the once great middle class that now suffers in silence.

Despite an increase in productivity in recent decades, compensation for the American worker has been stagnant. In addition, 47% of American jobs are at high risk of being lost to automation and A.I. by the mid-2030s.

In the United States, there has been an upward redistribution of over $50 trillion from the bottom 90% to the top 1% over the last 40 years. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have created a protection racket for the rich, and corporations are deliberately crushing unions.

In this David vs. Goliath story, Chris Smalls leads a movement to unionize Amazon workers for the first time, after the corporation fired Smalls for speaking up for workers’ rights. They are inspiring legions of workers to, as the late, great Congressman John Lewis said, get into “good trouble.”

BAD THINGS – debuting June 9th at the 2023 Tribeca Festival

For a group of friends in the Northeast, a weekend getaway at a snowy resort sounds like just what the doctor ordered. An opportunity to reconnect, relax, and recuperate among serene, snow-capped mountains and trees. But peace doesn’t last long as the ghosts of guests past and relationships long buried come to light. Soon enough, their trip transforms into a psychological tailspin and bloody nightmare, as both long-deceased guests and the space itself come to life, and the group turn on each other in a race to stay alive.

THE FOURTH WALL – Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival June 10th

THE FOURTH WALL is a character-driven documentary series in which the son of cult leaders investigates the transgressive group he was raised inside of, discovering long-buried secrets about the truth of his childhood. This is the story of the Sullivanians, New York’s secretive “psychotherapy sex cult,” which was hidden in plain sight on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in the 1970s and ’80s, thriving underground from its utopian heyday to its dramatic collapse in 1991. This history has never before reached a public audience in such a complete and dramatic form as captured in this documentary, which moves beyond the typical cult-narrative to explore the emotional fallout for perpetrators as well as victims, revealing the trauma, guilt and healing of those who were involved. Through intimate and exclusive access to the former members, therapists, and children of the group, series creators Keith Newton, son of the Sullivanian leaders, and filmmaker Luke Meyer (Darkon, Breaking A Monster) unpack an emotional journey that reverberates across decades, leading to the cult’s haunting and unpredictable aftermath.

MGM+ Picks Up Original True-Crime Docuseries Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein – Streaming in September

Docuseries about brutal serial killer who inspired Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs will premiere on MGM+ in September

MGM+ announced that it has picked up the four-episode true-crime docuseries Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein, directed and executive produced by James Buddy Day (Blumhouse’s Compendium of Horror, Fall River). It will premiere on MGM+ in September.

This MGM+ original docuseries follows the horrifying grave robber and serial killer Ed Gein, otherwise known as “The Plainfield Ghoul” and “The Mad Butcher,” whose crimes inspired such iconic films as PsychoThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs.

For years, filmmakers, journalists, and scholars have tried to unravel the mind of this notorious killer, and with new reveals and never-before-heard recordings, viewers will be transported to late-1950s Middle America and submerged in Gein’s perverse mind. The series explores Gein’s upbringing and twisted relationship with his mother (which famously inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho), his early grave robbing, the murders leading up to his arrest, and the police’s discovery of his terrifying house of horrors—all accompanied by the brand-new revelations revealed in the recordings.

“This gripping and disturbing docuseries shines a light on an infamous chapter in our true-crime history,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+.  “Psycho takes an in-depth look at not only the life of one of the most notorious serial killers of our time, but also explores the impact his crimes had on both the victims and our culture.”

Jill Latiano Howerton and Josh Kunau also serve as executive producers for Roots Productions.  Amazon & MGM Studios Distribution will distribute the series internationally.
