DISNEY+ SHARES PHOTOS & HIGHLIGHTS FROM MARVEL STUDIOS’ ANIMATION PRESENTATION AT SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON
Today at Comic-Con in San Diego, enthusiastic fans got a look at what’s coming up from Marvel Studios’ Animation.
Moderator Paul F. Tompkins introduced panelists Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ head of streaming television and animation; Ryan Meinerding, head of visual development; Bryan Andrews, director of “What If…?” and executive producer of “Marvel Zombies”; AC Bradley, writer and executive producer of “What If…?”; Beau DeMayo, writer and executive producer of “X-Men ’97”; Kirsten Lepore, writer, director and executive producer of “I Am Groot”; and Jeff Trammell, writer and executive producer of “Spider-Man: Freshman Year.”

“I AM GROOT”
“I Am Groot” writer/director/executive producer Kirsten Lepore answered questions about the upcoming series and treated the audience to the trailer and new key art. A surprise screening of one of the shorts, “Groot Takes a Bath,” delighted everyone, and applause greeted the announcement of a second collection of shorts.
There’s no guarding the galaxy from this mischievous toddler! So get ready as Baby Groot takes center stage in his very own collection of shorts, exploring his glory days growing up—and getting into trouble—among the stars. “I Am Groot,” five original shorts featuring several new and unusual characters, stars everyone’s favorite little tree, Baby Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.
The executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum and James Gunn.
“I Am Groot” launches exclusively on Disney+ August 10, with all five shorts available for viewing.
“SPIDER-MAN: FRESHMAN YEAR”
Jeff Trammell teased the show with the cast of characters, and Ryan Meinerding showed off the new Spider-Man suit designed for the series. A fun reveal was that moderator Paul F. Tompkins will be playing a character in the series. A second season was also announced, aptly titled “Spider-Man: Sophomore Year.”
“Spider-Man: Freshman Year” isan animated series that follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots. Executive producer Jeff Trammel serves as head writer.
“Spider-Man: Freshman Year” comes exclusively to Disney+ in 2024.
“WHAT IF…?”
Bryan Andrews and AC Bradley talked about the Emmy-nominated series and showed the trailer for Season Two. The audience went wild when, at the end of the presentation, a surprise screening of one episode of the highly anticipated next season was shown, and a third season was announced.
“What If…?” Season 2 continues the journey with The Watcher as our guide through the vast multiverse, introducing brand new and familiar faces throughout the MCU. The animated series questions, revisits, and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles. Directed by executive producer Bryan Andrews with executive producer AC Bradley as head writer.
Season two of “What If…?” launches exclusively on Disney+ in early 2023.
“MARVEL ZOMBIES”
Bryan Andrews offered background on the series and its origins spawning from an episode of “What If…?” Season 1, as well as concept art.
The animated series “Marvel Zombies” from Marvel Studios reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge. Directed by executive producer Bryan Andrews and written by executive producer Zeb Wells.
“Marvel Zombies” will stream exclusively on Disney+.
“X-MEN ’97
Cheers erupted when Brad Winderbaum spoke fondly of the legacy of “X-Men: The Animated Series” and presented a sizzle reel featuring cast and creatives from the popular ‘90s animated show. “X-Men ‘97” writer and executive producer Beau DeMayo then spoke about the new series, shared artwork, and presented an animatic AV piece. DeMayo also mentioned that the show will use the original “X-Men” theme music. A second season was also announced.
“X-MEN ’97” isan animated series from Marvel Studios that explores new stories in the iconic ’90s timeline of the original series. Beau DeMayo is executive producer and head writer.
“X-Men ’97”” will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ Fall 2023.

WES ANDERSON, FOCUS FEATURES, AND INDIAN PAINTBRUSH REUNITE ON ASTEROID CITY
Focus Features has partnered with Indian Paintbrush on ASTEROID CITY, the upcoming film written and directed by beloved auteur, Wes Anderson, based on a story by Anderson and Roman Coppola. The collaboration is a reunion among Anderson,Focus, and Indian Paintbrush following 2012’s MOONRISE KINGDOM. Focus and Universal International will handle worldwide distribution of the title.
The film is produced by Anderson and longtime collaborators Steven Rales, founder of Indian Paintbrush, and Jeremy Dawson.

ANGEL IN FLOP FLOPS Music Video – From Only Murders in the Building

Featured in Ep. 204 of “Only Murders in the Building,” “Angel in Flip Flops” (written by Steve Martin and Kirker Butler, produced by Paul Schaffer) is out now. Steve Martin (co-creator, EP, and star) says, “I am as proud of ‘Angel in Flip Flops’ as I am of any work I’ve done that is not that good.”
John Hoffman (co-creator, showrunner, EP) says, “When the notion came up in our writers’ room of Charles-Haden Savage, at the height of his success with his original “Brazzos” series, maybe having recorded an album that did really well in Germany before the Berlin Wall fell, we knew we had to talk further about it — immediately! And so we did — and when we shared this idea with Steve Martin — well, I think it was a day (if even?) before Steve had a title and a tune making its way through his genius mind and we were more than off and running. Steve dove in with Kirker Butler to craft a late 20th century classic and then, incredibly, along came Paul Shaffer to arrange that classic that is now our “Angel In Flip-Flops.” We’re all hoping for a revival of interest in the tune, of course — in Germany, and all parts of the world without walls!”
Letters From Camp Returns for a 3rd and Final Season on Audible – July 21st
The third and final season of the scripted Audible Original Letters from Camp debuts Thursday, July 21 with all eight episodes exclusively on Audible. Returning for their final summer are Jamie Lee Curtis as Director Sue and Sunny Sandler (Home Team, Hotel Transylvania)as Mookie Hooper, with performances by Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Queen Pins, Cruella) and Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones, Knives Out). Jacob Tremblay (Luca, Harley Quinn) joins the cast as Tallahassee Goldman along with a few surprise guests.
The comedic, heartfelt mystery, aimed at middle grade listeners and their parents, is written by Boco Haft (Family Guy) and produced by Curtis and Russell Goldman (Halloween, Halloween Kills). Curtis shared the long-lost letter from her goddaughter Boco that inspired the series.
It’s the summer of 2007, and Mookie Hooper returns to Camp Cartwright with a huge secret: this is going to be her final summer at camp. So, this has to be her best summer yet! Without anything to investigate, this is finally Mookie’s time to be a camper. She’s going to spend time with her buddy Carter Ruben-Rubens, finally make it into the inside of an inside joke with Fanny and her bunk, and possibly attempt a contact sport. The only thing that would put the summer over the top? Getting her first kiss. But that seems fairly unlikely since Squirrel Girl isn’t exactly anyone’s first crush.

Disney+ revealed plans to stream Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear” beginning August 3, 2022. A new spot celebrating the upcoming launch is now available. “’Lightyear’ looks amazing on the big screen, of course, but we are so excited to bring it to Disney+,” said Angus MacLane, who helmed the film. “We devoted years of our lives to this film and we are so proud of it. We want to share it with as many people as possible. Disney+ not only gives more fans an opportunity to see ‘Lightyear,’ it gives us all the means to see it again and again.”

This Fool – Streaming on Hulu August 12th
Inspired by the life and stand-up of star and co-creator Chris Estrada, “This Fool” is an irreverent, cinematic half-hour comedy set in working class South Central Los Angeles. The show centers around Julio Lopez, a 30-year-old who still lives at home, has been dating his girlfriend on and off since high school, and finds any excuse to avoid dealing with his own problems. Julio works at Hugs Not Thugs, a gang rehabilitation non-profit, where he butts heads with his older cousin Luis, an ex-gang member who just got out of prison and moved in with Julio and his family.

Apple TV+ debuts trailer for SURFSIDE GIRLS – Streaming August 19th
Apple TV+ revealed the trailer for new kids and family series, “Surfside Girls,” premiering Friday, August 19. Co-developed by WGA Award winner and showrunner May Chan (“American Girl: Corinne Tan,” “The Astronauts”), as well as Alex Diaz and Julie Sagalowsky Diaz (“The Shannara Chronicles,” “What’s Up Warthogs!”), and based on the bestselling IDW graphic novel series of the same name by author Kim Dwinell, the live-action series follows best friends Sam and Jade as they solve supernatural mysteries in their sleepy California beach town. Premiere Date Announced for Mattel’s Animated Preschool Series ‘Deepa & Anoop’ – August 16th
Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) announced today that its all-new animated children’s series Deepa & Anoop will debut on Netflix on August 16, 2022. Created by acclaimed Bollywood animator Munjal Shroff (Shortcut Safari), accomplished writer Lisa Goldman (Dragon Tales), and award-winning producer Heather Kenyon (Doki Adventures), Deepa & Anoop is Mattel Television’s first original series based on original intellectual property.
The colorful, music-driven series follows the adventures of seven-year-old Deepa and her best friend Anoop, a half-ton color-changing baby elephant. The dynamic duo, self-appointed “concierges of fun,” makes everything bigger, grander and more wonderful for guests at Mango Manor, the bed and breakfast run by Deepa’s multigenerational family. With a Bollywood number in every episode, Deepa creates music, merriment and mischief while working with the rambunctious Anoop to solve the simplest of problems with the most imaginative of solutions.
With a strong focus on the authenticity of Deepa’s Indian heritage, Deepa & Anoop includes 18 original song and dance performances, several of which are presented in the Bollywood tradition. The main cast is voiced by actors of Indian descent, including Pavan Bharaj as Deepa, Veena Sood (The Twilight Zone) as Naani-ji, and Ana Sani (The Magic School Bus) as Mama.

Mike – Streaming on Hulu August 25th
From creator/screenwriter Steven Rogers and the team behind “I, Tonya” and showrunner Karin Gist, executive producer of “Our Kind of People,” “Mike” explores the dynamic and controversial story of Mike Tyson. The eight-episode limited series explores the tumultuous ups and downs of Tyson’s boxing career and personal life – from being a beloved global athlete to a pariah and back again. Focusing the lens on Mike Tyson, the series examines class in America, race in America, fame and the power of media, misogyny, the wealth divide, the promise of the American Dream and ultimately our own role in shaping Mike’s story. “Mike” is an unauthorized and no-holds-barred look at the life of Mike Tyson – and it is one wild ride.

Four years after the events of last year’s Halloween Kills, Laurie is living with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) and is finishing writing her memoir. Michael Myers hasn’t been seen since. Laurie, after allowing the specter of Michael to determine and drive her reality for decades, has decided to liberate herself from fear and rage and embrace life. But when a young man, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell; The Hardy Boys, Virgin River), is accused of killing a boy he was babysitting, it ignites a cascade of violence and terror that will force Laurie to finally confront the evil she can’t control, once and for all.
