Despite the common belief, having bad credit doesn’t always come from having a shopping addiction. Yes, there are people who have bad credit who shopped themselves into a corner, but the majority of people don’t fall into that category. Instead, a lot of people have bad credit because of medical bills, student loans, or even circumstances they can’t control like unemployment or underemployment. No matter what the reason for you having bad credit is, there are ways to get your path to better credit again.
Know Your Credit Score
There are plenty of ways to check your credit but one of the best resources in the last few years are websites that pull your credit report from all three major companies. Not only can you get up to date scores from all three major companies, but they will send you notices if there are major changes in your credit score.
These services also offer you options to help you improve your score if you are lacking. From bad credit loan options, to secured credit cards. Yes, some may have upfront (refundable) fees, but if you are unable to get a credit card or loan without them, rebuilding your credit is going to be hard to do.
The biggest key to improving your credit is consistent and on time payments. Once you choose a secured credit card or loan that is ideal for you and to help you through your tough patch, make sure you pay your bills on time. One missed payment can make your credit score go down more and can delay you reaching your goal.
Make a plan of Action
We all have our own reasons for wanting to improve our credit score and we shouldn’t have to be denied the things we want because of things in our past. But even with that we all need to find our own way to get the things we want. Have a house in your plan? Find the ideal score you need for your goal. What is it you need to get that car or house? And what do you need to do to get it?
Having good credit is important, it can help you get the car you want, the house or apartment you want and could even help you get the job you want. But don’t worry, there are options out there, and as long as you keep up with your loan payments you’ll be on the path to better credit in no time.
