When we’re kids we’re told that the Sandman helps us fall asleep and takes us to the land of dreams. We also tend to blame him for the sand in our eyes in the morning too. The Sandman is one of those mystical creatures that kids believe in and hear stories about up to a certain age – but I don’t ever recall watching a movie about the Sandman. That is until Shout Factory sent us a copy of The Sandman and The Lost Sands of Dreams to watch. This stop animation movie out of Germany wasn’t exactly what we expected but was a lot of fun!
Filmed in a similar format to James and the Giant Peach, The Sandman and the Lost Sands of Dreams is a stop motion 3D animation. In the movie you’re whisked off to the land of dreams with Miko when he is recruited by the Sandman and his faithful sidekick Nepomuk the Sheep. Together they have to defeat Habumar, the master of Nightmares and stop him from stealing the Sand of Dreams of Dreamland.
The movie is a lot of fun, and it does include nightmares so some younger kids may be put off by that. However, the movie does it in a way that isn’t too scary and overall the movie was enjoyable for all age groups. The Sandman And The Lost Sand Of Dreams is great for kids, and a fun movie to help incorporate the Sandman and even the story of counting sheep into their bedtime ritual. The movie has a total run time of 83 minutes and is available online on Amazon and in stores.
