The Addams Family 2 Takes to The Road to Outrun a Scary Possibility

The Addams Family is a Halloween staple, and real fans of the family can watch the creepy family year-round. And this year, fans get a new version of the creepy family to enjoy just before the holiday. But is it the same Addams Family we are used to? Is this new version of the Addamses what fans are looking for or a bit of a softened version for kids that forget the adult fans of the franchise?

The Addams Family 2 movie Review

The Addams Family 2 brings an all-star voice cast featuring Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton, Wallace Shawn, Snoop Dogg as ‘IT’, Bette Midler, and Bill Hader. Voices that people will come to the movies to see on that alone, but they are lost in the characters, and some are almost indistinguishable. And honestly, the movie doesn’t rely on the cast as much as sit should.

Instead, it takes the family on a road trip – as Morticia and Gomez try to outrun the possibility that Wednesday isn’t one of them. With a claim out in the open, instead of addressing it head-on – the family goes on a nationwide trip that sometimes crosses international lines in almost a slapstick tour of the country. With pop music tossed throughout the movie is definitely a more bubblegum version of the Addams Family that kids will be drawn to.

But where does this leave older fans? Fans of the family that grew up with the series from the 1960’s or the relaunch of the movies in the 90’s or even the cartoon version of them? The truth of the matter, most older fans might find this version of the Addamses hard to watch. The star power may bring them into the theaters but the disconnect from the original fan base may make it hard to get through the movie.

Does it make The Addams Family 2 a bad movie? No, but it’s definitely for kids and one that they’ll be drawn to. Unlike similar movies like the Hotel Transylvania series, the new Addams Family films isn’t based off decades of fandom which it will be judged against. For kids, who may only know this version of the Addams family the movie will be fun, full of laughs and a fun continuation from the first movie – but parents may have a hard time enjoying the movie with their kids.
