Flora and Ulysses Movie Review

Heroes can come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes you may even find them in a place you wouldn’t expect. In the latest Disney+ release Flora & Ulysses, the idea of the unexpected hero comes to the screen with a fun new story.

Based on the book by Kate DiCamillo, Flora & Ulysses focuses on the unlikely friendship of Flora – a super hero obsessed young girl and her new found friend Ulysses – a squirrel with super powers. While the premise sounds silly and the story is perfect for a Disney audience – the result is a heartwarming and entertaining movie.

Like any super hero, Ulysses does have enemies – but being a squirrel that means they are humans who just don’t understand. This helps create some great comedic moments in the film, but also keeps the conflicts to ones that are mostly kid friendly.

The movie and story, do tackle bigger problems as well. Flora’s parents are currently separated and going through a hard time. This is actually a catalyst for part of the story but will help make the story more relatable to young viewers who may not live in a “traditional” nuclear family often portrayed on the screen. While we appreciate that the story goes full circle and ultimately results in a happy ending, it may be a good place to discuss with kids the difference in movies versus reality.

Now, we wouldn’t recommend getting a pet squirrel to anyone since wild animals belong in the wild. But we would absolutely recommend you check out Flora & Ulysses when it hits Disney+ on Friday. While the concept is a little bit silly, and is almost too perfect for the types of kids movies we expect from Disney – the movie will entertained the whole family and you will enjoy watching as much as your kids will.
