From epic battles to military wars – there are many planets and different places the Star Wars movies and shows have taken us over the decades. But now, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is hitting Disney+, a series following four kids on an accidental adventure through space and their attempt to get back home. While this may seem a slightly unlikely addition to the franchise, bringing the stories home to the suburban side of a planet and showing what every day civilians deal with, isn’t something we’ve experienced before in the Star Wars Universe.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew tells the story of KB, Fern, Wim, and Neel on a space adventure they never expected to be on. After Wim and Neel find what they suspect is an abandoned Jedi Temple, the four unearth and activate a disabled spaceship. And while they only want to go home, their attempts actually send them into hyperdrive and to the other side of the universe. Partnering with Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), they try to make their way back home – but find out no one knows how to get to their planet At Attin. Instead, they find out that At Attin is considered a myth because of the riches it contains – and now they have to battle pirates while they’re trying to get just get home to their parents.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew seems to take a bit more of a light-hearted approach to the universe and franchise. Sure there are bad guys, and space adventures but the story is based around kids and it isn’t as intense as some of the more epic movies in the cinematic universe or the other series that have come out. Yes, it does feel quite a bit like Goonies in Space with pirates and treasure and kids holding the reigns of the stories, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It brings the franchise to another audience and brings it down to a kid-friendly level that can be a great introduction to younger viewers. And it takes some of the seriousness off of the stories as well. It also seems to bring a more “human” touch to it – it’s not just wars and battles, instead, it’s the everyday life that happens while the rest of the military action is happening as well. It grounds the franchise in a reality that a lot of viewers can relate to, even if it still looks a bit futuristic or alien at times.

You can stream the first two episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew on Disney+ now.
