We’re big kids in our house – we watch animated movies all the time. I mean that – All. The. Time! Just because we have other responsibilities doesn’t mean we can’t love watching animated shows. Part of our collection is the whole Shrek series, I think the only movie we don’t own is the holiday shorts. They’re for kids, but have enough adult humor in them to make them funny enough to watch over and over again.

I had heard that Dreamworks had brought Shrek the Musical to Broadway. Color me pessimistic, but how could they turn a kids movie into a Broadway musical? But then I heard rave reviews, saw that the musical had won a Tony…

Dreamworks Studios sent me a copy of Shrek the Musical on Blu-Ray combo pack to review. I’m not going to lie, when I popped it in I was still a bit… skeptical. How much of the story could they translate to musical theater?

I was only into the show for a few minutes before I was hooked. Yes, it showed a lot of the scenes we were familiar with from the movie – but they added much more. The musical version gives you more of the characters back stories, and takes you on more of an emotional journey with Shrek and Princess Fiona. The actors actually sound a lot like the characters in the movie, so your kids can relate. But as added bonuses there are nods to other great Broadway Musicals like Wicked. And I give high praises to the actor who plays Lord Farquaad – since most of his roll he does on his knees!

Like the movies it’s a family friendly show, but there some more adult jokes that will make you laugh as the show goes on. Overall, I think it’s a great show and can only imagine what it would be like live!

  1. My favorite character is probably Shrek. I’m actually auditioning for Shrek the musical in my city in January and I think if I were to win, it help me get to know the musical a lot better! Hope I Win! 🙂

  13. I think I’m the only person anywhere who actually loves Farquaad! He’s just so pompous and funny and I absolutely adore him!

  17. Donkey is the one we seem to quote most at home, and if I have to pick a favorite he’s the one. We’ve seen the musical 3x- once on Broadway in NYC, once in Hershey Theater in PA, and once in Elmira, NY. What was interesting was how they honed things as they went, such as changing how they presented the dragon, and how the show began. Very fun to have this as our family show – my hubby and I saw the original Shrek movie on a date pre-marriage, and now it’s our family thing. We even have a bathroom decorated in Shrek! 🙂
