Every super hero has an origin story, and not all of them are created equally. From the moment we saw the trailer for Dark Phoenix we were intrigued how they would bring the back story of Jean Grey and how she went from just a mutant in the X-men to the most powerful being in the universe.
While the movie theaters seem to have a new epic super hero adventure coming out every month – is there even space for a new X-men movie in the mix and how will it stand up compared to other ones that are dominated right now like End Game and Captain Marvel?
As far as origin stories go – Dark Phoenix starts at the beginning for Jean and where she loses her family and comes to find her self at the Charles Xavier School for Gifted Youths. It covers the complex relationship with her own powers and how she’s supposed to deal with them in the role of the X-Men.
The movie has the characters you love and expect in the X-men universe like Raven, Magneto and even the Beast. The time line is a bit off and the character ages are a bit different than you would expect – but the complexity of their relationships is on full display. There are parts that are a bit slower than you would expect.
As far as movies go, it is a good couple hours of entertainment. The one major complaint we had was the action was heavy in one section of the film. It seemed the movie relied more on drama than it did action – which is not what fans are always looking for when they go into any super hero movie.
Overall, for an addition to the X-men universe and the over all Marvel world – Dark Phoenix is one that could be a great entry to the super hero genre and makes for a fun night at the movie.

About Dark Phoenix:
This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
