Every fall as the air gets a just a little more crisp and the leaves begin to fall, fans will pop on one of their favorite fall movies – Practical Magic. The 1998 cottage core witch movie captures our hearts and, lets be real, never really let it go. With different generations of Owens women living in a Victorian house, with a green house and garden that many of us still dream about owning one day ourselves. And this weekend, the Owens family is back in theaters with a new chapter to the story to captivate fans.

After almost thirty years Practical Magic 2 is hitting theaters. After another tragic loss in the family, Sally swears off magic again but this time erases the memory of it from the minds of Kylie and Antonia. As her daughters grow up and start taking their lives in their own hands, they have no idea that they come from a line of strong witches or about the curse that could affect their love lives. While Antonia focuses on her medical degree and career, Kylie is still finding her footing and has found her love match not knowing the consequences that could have.

After Kylie declares her love to her boyfriend, tragedy strikes and the all of the secrets Sally has been holding back come to light. Determined to save the love of her life, Kylie takes the Raven book and follows its instructions in the hopes she can find a way to break the curse. But without a base knowledge in magic, everything she’s trying could put her own future at risk. And Sally and Gilly try to find her to stop her from doing something that can’t be undone.

With most of the original cast returning, Practical Magic 2 is a comfortable return to the world for fans. There are obviously some changes and after almost thirty years – it didn’t feel that out of place in the overall story line. It’s easy to slip back into the story of the Owens family, and thankfully the movie used minimal flash backs to fill the overall run time. And besides a couple slow spots, the movie and the story works well. At it’s heart, Practical Magic 2 is still focused one the same thing – love, familial ties, the divine feminine and the magic that ties it all together. Its a great start to fall, and non-scary witches that know their familial bond is the strongest magic there is.

Practical Magic 2 was really made for the fans, and the ones who waited almost thirty years to see the story continue. Sure there are the books that the story continues in, and the movies aren’t exactly true to the books anyhow. But, being a fan is going to heavily influence if you like the movie or not. We can break it down and pick it apart for the use of de-aging on the main actors in scenes, or you can sit back and just enjoy the return of some of your favorite witches. If you loved the original, there’s a good change you’re going to love this movie as well. It’s a completely different story, and may break some of the precedent that original set, but in a movie about witches – it’s something you can forgive.

The movie still focuses on the stronger power of family, love and sisterhood at its heart. Grab your favorite witches and some popcorn and check out Practical Magic 2 in theaters this weekend.
