Polite Society Review

Buckle in for a good time as Polite Society hits theaters this weekend. The movie follows the story of two sisters who are fighting to find their own place in society, and their parent’s approval as well as fight against the expectations society has for them. At the heart of the movie is a lot of laughs, deep relationships, and some amazing fight scenes in fantastic garments.

Polite Society Review

The movie follows Ria Kahn, a stunt woman in training – or that’s her dream. When her sister decides to drop out of art school and feels listless in life, she seemingly falls into an arranged marriage with someone more “well-born” within their community. But nothing is as it seems. Ria is dealing with bullies at school, while her sister Lena starts to dutifully fall into the role of the future bride to this family of prestige. Not letting her sister give up on her dreams, Ria plots with her friends to save Lena from destroying her future and giving up on her art.

Ria, still in her secondary education has a lot on her plate but also an imagination that seems more rooted in her fantasy than reality. She sees her life playing out like the action movies she hopes to star in in the future, but that actually could be seen as her advantage. Do the moments play out as dark and dangerous as she sees them? Or is her being hyper-aware of every possible danger help her in the long run? You’re never quite sure – but it does lead to a lot of hilarious moments and the extremes in the film make you want to watch it again.

Polite Society

Polite Society is nothing short of a hilarious and fun time in the movie theater. It’s rare to find a movie that revels in its own ridiculousness and will keep you laughing through the whole movie. The mix of reality peppered into the extreme world that Ria sees around her and the nefarious plot that is unfolding around her is well-balanced. Are the world and everyone in it as evil as she sees, or is it her overactive imagination? Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter because the result is situation after situation that will have you laughing.

The movie is filled with girl power, sisters who love each other and also fight like sisters do – there’s really nothing like that sisterly relationship and unless you have experienced it, it’s hard to explain. There is cursing, blood, and a lot of fighting, but at the end of it – there is still an empowering story and love between the sisters and even friends. It’s a movie packed with girl power on every level.

Even if the trailer doesn’t fully prepare you for the movie, moviegoers won’t be disappointed in this girl-power action film. Loaded with empowerment, love, and fighting against societal norms, Polite Society may just be one of the most enjoyable theater-going experiences audiences will have had in a long time.
