It’s one of those joys of summer – fresh cherries! In northern Michigan, it’s this time of year cherries are booming, and we know Traverse City is known for it. I love cherries, but not the price at the store, so last year I planted a couple cherry trees out back. Since this was our first year, we only got a handful of cherries – but the farmers market was booming and I was able to grab some at a great price. But then we had those dreaded pits to deal with.
Let’s face it – they’re the pits. Pun totally intended! I love the taste of fresh cherries, so you can easily find me grabbing a few out of the bowl as I go through the kitchen and most of the time I wasn’t worrying about the pits – that is until I accidentally swallowed one! No, one cherry pit wont kill me – but I don’t want to make a habit of it. So I brought out the Cherry and Olive Pitter that RSVP International sent me to review.
The Endurance Cherry and Olive Pitter is made of durable stainless steel – and is even dishwasher safe! There really aren’t any instructions needed to use it. Simply remove your cherry stem, and fit the rod over the top, and push it through the top of the cherry. It will push the pit or stone out of the bottom of your cherry while leaving the fruit in tact. I did find a few had a small bottom flap left over, and some were over ripe and splattered me with juice as I used it. Each cherry is unique, but their pit should be right in the middle and it shouldn’t be hard to get them out.
It didn’t take very long before I had a pile of pitted cherries ready for me to rinse and enjoy. And while the Cherry Pitter is dishwasher safe, I found it was just as quick and was to wash by hand and keep it near the cherries. No more swallowing the pits, and more fresh cherries for me!
