Remember those summers of your childhood, before everything got complicated and before technology took over your life? Monster Summer, a film from Nickle City Pictures is taking us back in time with their new teen thriller movie.
Following a young boy named Noah (Mason Thames) and his group of friends in the summer of 1997, when things aren’t how they’re supposed to be in their small island town. When their friend Ben (Noah Cottrell) is attacked by what his girlfriend describes as a witch – they set off to find out how to save him and stop the witch from attacking other people.
Monster Summer is supposed to take place on Martha’s Vineyard, a popular summer vacation spot for people with means and the ability to take whole summers off. While the movie was shot in Southport, North Carolina, the coastal town could be the perfect summer retreat of the 90s. But the location isn’t the only benefit the time period of the movie provides. Even though they were starting to come into popularity, the teens in the movie aren’t stuck to their cell phones, and the recycling of styles from that time period means that the wardrobe could easily have been off the rack at Target. While it may not be the too distant past, it does force the kids to be in the moment and other than using a camcorder occasionally, it may be their imagination driving their fear through parts of the story.
For what it is, Monster Summer delivers. It’s a summer intrigue movie built around possible mythical creatures plaguing a small summer resort town. Overall, it’s a pretty low-risk type of scary movie, or monster movie that is perfect for older kids and young teens. There are also some major actors that the parents will recognize and a twist that they can appreciate at the end of the movie. You may get feelings of nostalgia watching Monster Summer, it’s one that you won’t regret watching with your kids. It may even bring you back to watching those old Goosebumps movies we had as kids.
Monster Summer will be released in theaters this weekend.
