Fix Plumbing Issues Before You Leave
Would anybody want to face a plumbing leak after coming back from vacations? Definitely, no one.
So, why should you?
Before leaving, turn off all water supplies from the main point, i.e. at the main valve. If you’re going on a long vacation, tell a friend or neighbor to run the faucets and turn on the water twice a month or at least once a month.
Adjust The Settings of The Water Heater
We all hate paying bills of what we never used. Since many of today’s water heaters provide the “vacation mode” option, it’s wise to take advantage of this. So, if you’re going on a short trip, set it in the vacation mode. This way, the water heater will run at an optimum level so you can save the bills accordingly.
Don’t Go For A Complete Blackout
Turn off all the lights. For security reasons, keep a single light bulb switched on. An empty house is always a risk. To avoid any mishap, use CFL bulb or other bulbs with automatic light sensors.
Treat Your Refrigerator Appropriately
Coming back home with stinky smells of spoiled food isn’t a good idea. To never face this scenario, remove all perishable foods such as milk, juices, and yogurt from the refrigerator.
Still, you have two options to choose from: leave the refrigerator switched on or switch it off. If you want to leave it open, make sure you keep some water bottles inside so it will run efficiently. If you don’t want to leave it running, open the doors to prevent odor, mildew, and molds.
Take Care of The Plants
If your gardening passion doesn’t let you stay away from your lovely plants, pamper them before you go by trimming the leaves. Also, ask a trusted neighbor or a friend to water the plants every other day. If you have a large-scale garden, arrange for a credible lawn service.
Other Considerations
- Newspaper: Tell your hawker to stop delivering until you’re back.
- Security: Inform your security company that you’ll be away.
- Leaks: Check all the water leaks before leaving. If you find any, get it fixed before going.
- Phone: Avoid leaving such messages “I’m out of town.”
- Car: Tell your friend to at least start it once a week to avoid any malfunctioning.
- Locks: Lock the doors from inside and outside
- Unplug: Unplug all switches including mobile charger, laptop charger, TV switch, microwave, and other devices.
- Floors: Remove carpets or roll them back until you return.
- Furniture: Cover the sofa, bed, and chairs with plastic sheets or at least with bed sheets. If your vacation is long, try to wrap the furniture with a wrapping sheet.
- Smoke detector: Check your smoke detector if it’s in proper working condition.
- Banks: Inform your banks that you’re traveling (especially when you’re going out of the country).
- Bin: Empty all the bins.
