It’s not often that a fourth movie in the series still has fans excited when it hits theaters. The energy and excitement around John Wick: Chapter 4 is almost palpable. The movie picks up immediately after John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum, with John being excommunicado and on the run again. In the final chapter, he will be free of the hold of the High Table dead or alive.
But what can you expect heading into John Wick: Chapter 4? The short answer is everything you expect.
John Wick: Chapter 4 follows the same patterns as the first three movies – it’s a movie short on dialogue and heavy on action scenes. You quickly go from darkly lit scenes to ones with vibrant and almost extreme colors, all the while trudging through the underbelly of the underworld. There are extremely likable characters, some that are obviously the bad guys (or the even worse bad guys) that are easily identifiable by their clothing and accent – and even one that looks like he was pulled right out of a comic book or a video game final battle scene. There are fight scenes in full and busy clubs where patrons don’t even stop dancing to the loud techno music. The movie will sweep you through beautiful locations throughout the world and take you to the darkest pits and tunnels of places you’ve never seen before. And of course, expect there to be a dog, a horse, and fight scenes with cars involved.
Really, there isn’t anything too new with this latest John Wick movie. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less enjoyable. There are some different and new camera angles for some of the fight scenes including an isometric view through a building going room from room to capture the different fights and switching back to the first person and back again. But the movie is pretty much everything fans are expecting and wanting from the franchise. One simply doesn’t start watching John Wick at the 4th movie, so fans know what to expect and what they will be seeing. And it seems, that’s exactly what the directors and producers set out to make – a movie they will enjoy.
As much as fans love John Wick, the movie (as many of the previous ones did) will make you question just how many times he would have died from his injuries in the film. He truly seems to be superhuman and maybe that is how he continued to keep his title of Babyaga. There’s no doubt the movie has some faults in it, but it is filled with laughs, action, and everything that will make you overlook those faults and want to watch the movie again.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is in theaters everywhere this weekend.
