Some of the best stories come out of ones from around the world. That is exactly what Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock heart is, based on the popular French Novel La Mecanique du Coeur (The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart) by Mathias Malzieu, the story was surprising, new and a breath of fresh air. I had no idea what the story was about when Shout Factory sent me a copy of it to review, but I was pleasantly surprised by the story, but the film overall.
It is the coldest day in history when Jack is born in 1874 Edinburgh. So cold in fact, his heart is frozen solid. In order to save his life, his midwife inserts a cuckoo-clock in the place of his heart, which allows him to live. But in order for Jack to live, he has to follow special rules including not falling in love – but as all young people do, Jack does fall in love but at what costs?
It was nice seeing a new story brought to the screen. I wasn’t familiar to the story of the Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart, but the story is strong and stands well on its own. The movie’s clean animation, fantastic imagery and powerful emotional moments make it a movie you’ll want to watch over and over again.
Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart is available on DVD and Blu-Ray on October 7th at stores near you or on Amazon. It has a total run time of 89 minutes.
