What if you had the change to change your future and have your dreams come true, all you had to do was make it through your worst nightmares to make it happen? The new animated film from Netflix, In Your Dreams, takes two young siblings on an adventure together through the dream world to make a deal with the Sandman for their hearts desire. With a mix of themes similar to Bedtime Stories (2008) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), In Your Dreams just seems of a bit of a messy amalgamation of ideas tossed to the screen for a story.
In Your Dreams isn’t very deep when you get down to it. The story isn’t great and at times rather bizarre. But really, with dreams – that seems to track in the overall theme of the movie. There’s nothing that means the story has to make sense, and in the larger scheme of things it wont matter to kids. But the story focusing on Stevie putting her parents marriage and family’s future on her shoulders seems much deeper and darker than it should be in a kids movie. Yes, this will be something that a lot of kids go through and can relate to, but it shouldn’t be something that focuses the whole story around it.
Where the movie shines, however, is in the animation. With water, hair and cloud simulations rendered stunningly – it does seem that the movie took every great animation achievement of the past decades and built on them. Even if the story seems to be lacking at times, the animation may keep your attention more than the actual plot.
Overall, the movie has a decent sound track too and even tosses in a nod to Metallica bringing in the nod to the Sandman. But there are a couple songs that seem to be odd placements in the movie for kids. Lyrics, of course changed to make them more family friendly – but definitely a decision was made for that inclusion.
