There seems to be a certain age that movies and society seem to disregard women. From excluding them from leading roles to just different aspects of the narrative altogether. But every once in a while, we get a movie where not only is the age of the actress and lead celebrated – but focused on in a positive way. Rarely, do these roles discuss sexuality and the sexual need of the women in the film – and let’s face it, that topic is often glossed over in media anyhow.
But once in a while, you get a movie that not only focuses on all of these things but not only embraces the complication of sexual expression but shows that it not only can be a positive thing but embraces it. And while at first apprehensive about the concept of the movie, I have to say that Good Luck to You, Leo Grande does just that.
Let’s face it when you look at the poster or even the trailer for Leo Grande, it looks like another typical older woman with a younger man trope-type movie. Another How Stella Got Her Groove Back type story played out for the audience to show that yes, older women can be sexy still too. And while, taking back the power and your own sexuality is part of the story of Good Luck to You, Lego Grande – it’s not what makes the movie so good.
Instead, Leo Grande focuses more on years of repression, being ignored, and breaking down your own mental barriers. As the movie progresses, and barriers are dropped so are the restrictions on what is being shown as well. Starting out very conservative and not showing any skin or anything on screen to more as the movie progresses and Nancy begins to come into her own and put herself and her sex life as a priority.
The movie is simply charming. It takes everything you would normally see in a movie with an older star and throws it out the window. It’s nice to see a movie embracing a woman’s sexuality and not just playing it for a large audience. It shows how much taking control of that aspect of your life can not only change your stance on the world but empower you at the same.
Good Luck To You, Leo Grande will be streaming on Hulu on June 17th. While this movie is for older audiences, it’s one that will definitely challenge the ageism, sexism, and even sexual beliefs of viewers. Put simply, is an empowering film about women’s sexuality at any age.
