My job takes me everywhere and my office can change daily. One day it can be the living room couch, the next I’m in the classroom or in a hotel on the other side of the country. It’s a trend that a lot of younger professionals are learning to adapt to. But one thing none of us can outrun are colds and other illnesses that we can pick up from traveling or even from our students.
As much as I’ve tried to, I’ve been unable to hide from the coughing and sneezing that has surrounded me. And while I’m always on the go, there are times that making it in to see my doctor is just not an option. Thankfully, I was given an online doctor visit to try out with Amwell. Since I won’t be able to see my doctor until next week, this is the perfect option for me in a pinch.
I logged into Amwell’s website and created an account in under five minutes. They need basic information, your location (so they can find a Physician that can practice within your state) and your insurance (if you have it). If you do have insurance, it is applied to your online doctor visit fee – the list of the types of insurance accepted is amazing since most offices don’t take that many plans. Even if Amwell doesn’t take your insurance, the online visits are more affordable than going to an urgent care or even an office visit – mine used to cost me near $100 a visit, but using Amwell it was only $59!
With my a sore throat and clogged nose, I logged into Amwell and was able to see the doctors that were available in my area (or at least could practice within Michigan) and were available to talk to me. After selecting the doctor of my choice we discussed my symptoms, the best course of action and the medicine that would me get on the mend soon. Amwell uses the camera on your laptop or cell phone so that you can video chat with a doctor and you can get answers within real time easily.
Our schedules are busy and using Amwell fits perfectly within our lifestyle. But there are so many other ways it can be used as well – from medical advice, or for patients that have mobility issues and cannot make it to the doctor. With cold and flu season still at its peak, I can imagine using Amwell to help me get through it. No more dredging out into the snow, or spreading the illness I have. Instead, I can pull up the doctor on my cell phone or laptop whenever I need.
