It seems to be a while since we’ve had a Will Smith action movie, and while we see him base jumping on Youtube – is this the type of movie we can’t expect to see him in as the years go by? With his more family friendly titles coming out this year, Aladdin and Spies in Disguise, it was a refreshing reminder to see Gemini Man in the middle of it with is packed with fast paced action and some mystery at the same time.

The trailers for Gemini Man tell you the basic plot, that a clone has been made of Will Smith’s character Henry and has been sent to kill him when he decides to retire. While watching the movie, you already know this going into it, and may wonder if that’s all there is to the movie. But the movie offers you not only fast action scenes but some other twists and turns along the way.

With a PG-13 rating you wouldn’t expect as much violence and cursing as Gemini Man has in it, but there are a lot of moments where there is implied violence and no blood on screen. For the amount of fighting and injuries that both of the main characters (played by Smith) endure, there is a distinct lack of gore in the film thankfully. Some of the action scenes will make you cringe as the hits land and throughout the film the action is tempered with jokes and moments that will make you laugh.

We appreciate that Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character Danny was not only given a background, but she was able to hold her own in fights and wasn’t just used as a plot device. Accept of course when she chooses to be to help the main character as a whole. Her character could have been fleshed out a bit more but she wasn’t a one dimensional character that was just on screen to make it more pretty.

While most fans wont complain about seeing double when it comes to Will Smith, some of the aging down moments aren’t as seamless as you would hope. The fast action scenes, the character of Junior seemed a little off compared to his older counter part. And the close ups looked good, but any fan of Will Smith since his Fresh Prince days will even think that they softened the features maybe just a bit too much.

Overall, Gemini Man is a fun popcorn movie and one that fans are going to like watching. It has the action elements of a Jason Bourne movie but with the comedy you can expect from pretty much every Will Smith role.
