theme party ideas

If you want to organize a unique and memorable party, that people will enjoy and talk about for a long time afterwards, you may want to try setting a theme party.

Whether it will be an anniversary, the celebration of some important personal or family event, or a pretext to gather with friends & family and have fun (because why not?) choosing a theme for a party will definitely liven the things up and add something extra to the general atmosphere, giving the guests the opportunity to be creative and explore new characters.

If you feel ready for the challenge, here are some ideas for your future theme party:

Toga Party

According to Wikipedia, a toga party is a costume party with a Roman or Greek theme where all the attendees are expected to wear a toga or something resembling a toga, normally made from a bed sheet and sandals. A counter cultural movement that rejected the mores of mainstream American life.

The toga parties are usually organised by college or university students. They are a kind of modern initiation rites for the freshmen, but are also events where students get to know each other, socialize & drink a lot (especially red wine). However, you don’t have to be a student to organize one of these. For this party, you don’t need fancy decorations or a lot of food. Some snacks and a mix of drinks will do the job. Plus, it will be easy and fun for the guest to dress up.

Hippie Party

The hippie subculture appeared as a countercultural movement in the 60’s that rejected the mores of mainstream American life, as described by Encyclopaedia Britannica.

The flower children” as they were called, advocated, among other things, nonviolence and love, freedom of expression.

If you want to bring that atmosphere to your party, make sure you have colorful decorations with the peace sign, rainbows and flowers, posters from that time. Put some  groovy music from artists like: The Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, and The Who. Buy some bandanas, bracelets, groovy temporary tattoos for your guests and make sure that the atmosphere is chill and inspires “love not war”.

Mexican Fiesta Party

If you are planning to have a really fun party with a lot of activities, a Mexican fiesta can be the right choice. Decorating for such a party can be also entertaining. You can do it using a Mexican chilli pepper pom, geometric paper garlands, napkin flowers, floral balls. Use cactus centerpieces and pepper candles as table decorations, as well as decorated sombrero chip services and sombrero place card holders. Don’ forget about piñatas, one of the most fun activities for parties. If you can afford it, invite a Mariachi band to play live music for you.

Also, suggest guests to dress up either as Mariachis or Flamenco dancers, or buy some items and let them take pictures dressed up in Mexican attires. For drinks, make sure you have enough Tequilas and Margaritas. Olé!

1980s Party

The 80’s were just amazing! It was the decade when celebrities like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran and many other rock legends became famous. It was the time of great experiments in fashion:it was the decade of skin-tight pants one, and also of baggy “MC Hammer” pants, it was the time when you could wear leg warmers, a sweater and a miniskirt all at the same time (and in electric neon colors), it was the time of shoulder pads, huge earrings, fingerless gloves…and many others.Make a CD with the hits of the time, decorate the house with neon, video game arcade or glam rock items.Make sure that you and your guests are wearing 80’s costumes and let the party begin!

Choosing a theme for a party is not easy, since there are so many possibilities. Each idea has its own advantages. First, establish for yourself what kind of atmosphere do you want at your party, what kind of activities. Look for something that resonates with you and be creative in adapting your choice to your needs and possibilities! And most important- have fun!
