Over the years, it seems I’ve taken my passion and love for writing and turned it into my career and the way that I actually pay my bills and provide for my family. There are days it still seems unreal to me, that my job is done sitting on my couch while wearing my yoga pants. But I don’t think I would change that for a second.
It almost seems too good to be true, and there are times I still curse my guidance counselor for not telling me that this was a job option, but we all know that it didn’t exist when we were back in school. I’m often asked by friends how they can start blogging, and let’s face it – it’s an amazing job. But it is a lot of work, as is every freelance business.
Freelancing can be one of the hardest career paths, but it can also be one of the most rewarding. There are a of great things about running your own business including setting your own hours, amazing friendships that you’d never meet otherwise, and a sense of pride in your work and business.
Anyone can start their own business, but it is not for everyone. The amount of work, often all day and night, and the lack of down time allowed will take a toll on you. It’s the dedication to making the business work. In order to start your own business you need to be dedicated to your business, the amount of work that it will take and making sure that you are committed to the business.
Before you get started with your own business you should ask yourself – What type of business do you want to run? What kind of business will it be: online or brick in mortar? What is your ultimate goal? How much are you willing to put into the business and to commit to it? When you are researching what you want to do for your own career path, one of the best things you can do is research people in similar fields. You can find people like Adrian Rubin who is a creative director who has been in the freelance game for a long time. Check out this Adrian Rubin interview to find out more about him and what drives him and his business.
The freelance life isn’t for everyone, but when you find your passion the hard work doesn’t seem like it is as hard as it is. You can find your own passion, start your own business and be your own boss.
