Following In The Footsteps Of Your Idols: Tips To Achieve Your Career Dreams

Many of us devote a significant amount of time to watching TV, sports and movies. If you feel inspired to try and forge a career path, and you’re desperate to follow in the footsteps of your idols, here are some tips and tricks to help you achieve your dreams.

Coaching, training and mentoring

One of the best places to start if you have ambitions to hit the big time is to investigate training and learning opportunities. Look for coaches and mentors, explore courses and programs and use the Internet to find recommendations and read reviews. Working with leading names in the theater industry such as Travis Preston of CalArts or famous sports or acting coaches can help you hone your skills, learn more about what it takes to be successful and discover opportunities to get a foot in the door. Gaining experience, undertaking training and developing your skill set will help you enhance your resume and increase your chances of getting the job you want.

Networking can be incredibly beneficial in industries such as acting, presenting, journalism and PR. If you have a dream to follow in the footsteps of your idols, it’s an excellent idea to try and meet people who already work in the industry, build a contact network and get your name out there. Look for details of events you can attend, make use of apps and websites to meet people online and figure out a strategy to make the most of every opportunity. Prepare in advance, create positive first impressions and follow up on leads or promising introductions or conversations.

Be prepared to work your way up

If you’re a fan of the movies, or you love to play or watch sports, it’s easy to get carried away with the rags to riches tales and dramatic stories of overnight success. In reality, most people who make it to the top work their way up from the bottom, dealing with rejection and negative feedback along the way. Be prepared to work hard, to start on the bottom rung of the ladder and to receive criticism. Be confident in your abilities, learn from feedback and keep working. Don’t let one setback make you feel like you’re not good enough or you won’t ever make it.

Research is incredibly valuable when you have a specific career path in mind, or you want to excel in a certain field or industry. Carry out research to find out what you need to do to maximize your chances of success, talk to people who have already made it and explore ways to enhance your prospects. Undertaking further study, joining workshops, doing courses or applying for internships, for example, may prove beneficial.

Many of us harbor ambitions to land the job of our dreams. If you watch movies or sports, and you long to follow in the footsteps of your heroes, why not start working on turning your dreams into a reality? Research, network, be prepared to work hard, and explore opportunities to study, train and learn from coaches, mentors and teachers.
