Quiet Bean Amplifier
I’m only 30 years old, and there are times that I have problems hearing. I’m not just talking about when I get an ear infection, which happens yearly due to allergies – but on occasion I still have problems. Due to my frequent ear infections I have a mild case of Tinnitus. That’s right – a ringing in my ears that can get bad if I’m around loud sounds or in crowds.

Quiet Bean Amplifier

Because of the Tinnitus and other issues if I’m in a large crowd and in other places I have a problem hearing people at times. Over this summer I met the nice people at Etymotic. They create products to help you hear better, protect your hearing and even protect your kids hearing while they’re listening to their favorite music. They offered to send me a set of their Bean Quiet Sound Amplifiers.

The Bean Quiet Sound Amplifiers are small devices that you insert in your ears and resemble hearing aids. That’s not what they are however. They don’t require visiting a doctor to get, you can simply order them online. They work with standard batteries, come with different eartips so you can get the right fit and even batteries to get you started.

So if the Beans aren’t hearing aids what are they? They’re just what their name says, they help amplify quiet noises. In the normal position they boost your hearing 15 dB, and on high they boost it 25 dB! While that may not sound huge – you will instantly notice a difference. If your hearing is normal, you still have lost a few decibels of range every few years – and that’s if you don’t have any ear damage.

The Beans were easy to use, after the battery was inserted I simply put them in and left them on the normal setting. One of the Beans did whistle a little – which I have been told is normal, but once they are fully inserted this stopped. The feedback is created by the airflow through the unit. I never switched my Bean on high, but rather kept it on normal the whole time. And I actually found that that didn’t need both at once – I could instantly hear more with one unit.

I tested the Bean Quiet Sound Amplifiers on a recent trip to my parents. At a rare quiet moment we had decided to test them to see how well they worked. The TV was on and I sat in the living room. My father ran all around the house whispering “can you hear me now?” almost like the old cell phone commercials  Each time I answered yes. At one point after I said yes I heard him say “there is no way you heard me” I just laughed and said “and I heard that”. We were both in disbelief how one of these little beans could boost my hearing that much. The best part – the TV wasn’t amplified enough to distract me.

While I only have little damage to my hearing I can see the Beans being a great resource when I’m going to conferences or large events. I wont need to strain to hear when people are talking in normal voices. This can also help save my voice so I wont feel like I have to yell to be heard at these events!

I can only imagine what the Bean Quiet Sound Amplifiers can do for someone with more hearing damage than I have. They are available online on Etymotic’s Website and will be available on Amazon soon. They may not be the most conventional gift idea this holiday season – but they will make sure you don’t miss out any of the conversations at your holiday parties!
