A good heist movie has intrigue, some misdirection and even a little comedy tossed in. And while Eenie Meanie tries to do all of these things, the movie ends up feeling as juvenile as the title makes it seem.
Following Edie (Samara Weaving), a young woman who is trying to put her life back on track after a rough childhood and life of crime. After finding out she’s over three months pregnant (with a wash board stomach), she goes to tell her Ex-boyfriend the news, only to get pulled back into the dark underbelly of the crime world. In order to save his life, she has to be the “get away” driver for a casino heist that is rigged from the beginning.
Riddled with issues from the very beginning, Eenie Meanie seems to forget what it’s doing a lot of the time. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, the movie does give a nod to some of the local areas, but quickly forgets where it is when it comes to the casino heist. It seems there was a mention that it was happening or implication that it was in Vegas, but Edie is able to drive off from the job and back to the safety of where she needs to go within a short distance and time. Yes, there are casinos near Cleveland, and throughout the state of Ohio, but going from the rolling hills near the shores of Lake Erie to the flat Vegas type style scenery doesn’t help any confusion.
We’re not even going to go into the deus ex machina of the car keys appearing in the shower shorts scene. That may be too much to unpack over all.
Yes, there are mobster style guys (not unheard of in the Midwest honestly). Yes, there car chase scenes and stunt driving – with quite a bit of J turns. But do they add to the story? Or is it just moving from one crazy scenario to another? Is this just like the genre of the movie – tossing everything at the screen to see what will stick and what will resonate with the audience? It’s messy, it’s lazy and let’s be real – a bit boring after a while.
But in the long run, the movie isn’t that serious and maybe that’s how we should be treating it. It’s not a thriller, it’s not exactly a comedy, or really a drama either. It dips it’s toes in all of the genres to try to find where it lands. Instead it’s riddled with inconsistencies and a plot that leaves you lacking. But if you don’t need anything serious, or really don’t care if it makes a lot of sense – Eenie Meanie is streaming on Hulu now.
