I love cooking and baking, and spend a lot of time in the kitchen. It wasn’t until earlier this year that I started experimenting with gourmet salts. My first recipe I made was chocolate cupcakes and used the vanilla salt in the recipe as well as a garnish on the homemade frosting.
Recently I found Beyond the Shaker – a company devoted to making a wide variety of premium gourmet salts. You can find from the sweet to savory and everything in between.
Beyond the Shaker sent me a great variety of their salts to try and review. The selection included the Chanterelle Vanilla (which is great in that cupcake recipe!), Cyprus Black Lava, French Herb Blend, Herb Garden Blend and Alderwood Smoke.
Now, some of the salt it’s easy to figure out what to do with them. The vanilla is great in desserts. I used Garden Herb Blend on a chicken that I roasted and it was delicious! But what do you do with Cyprus Black Lava or Alderwood Smoke? What would those pair well with? Each packet tells you what they would taste good with or suggestions on the front of it. But as you search through their large selection online you can find more suggestions of how to cook with the great product.
I love the variety of different gourmet salt options and how the changing of that one simple ingredient can change your whole meal and flavor. We have a collector and lover of different salts in our family and I plan to get her some of these for an upcoming birthday. What a delicious surprise!
There is still more experimenting with the Beyond the Shaker salt that will be happening in our kitchen when I find the right recipe. But tonight I made French Herb Potato Wedges. The French Herb Blend is a mixture of “vivacious herbs, luxurious truffle & the clean taste of fleur de sel”. Check out the quick and easy recipe below!

These wedges were great with homemade burgers and a bit of a more grown up twist on french fries!
