Daich Spreadstone Counter Kit Review

Since everyone is spending more time at home this year, we’re all spending more time at home. That money we had dog eared for vacations? We’re investing it into our homes and yards. Spending our extra time and money to make our homes our personal refuge. The reality is, we don’t know when things will be back to normal, and with that in mind, each improvement to our home makes it close to the dream home we have always wanted.

Remember when you first moved into your home? There were projects and things you wanted to change but life gets busy. Since we’re staying home, and things slowed down some, now is the perfect time to tackle some of those projects we’ve been putting off. And one on our list was to update these ugly counters.

When you move into an older ranch style home from the 50’s, sometimes the older kitchen comes with it. And an old wooden counter that has been painted over time and again is what this house came with. With layers of stains, chipping paint and uneven areas of the counter, it was covered with a peel and stick tile to give it a different appearance temporarily until we found a solution that we liked and wanted for a long time.

Updating has been a priority for years now, but replacing them remains out of the budget. And until we were introduced to the Daich Spreadstone Counter Top Resurfacing Kit, we didn’t know what we wanted to do with them. Daich sent us two of their counter resurfacing kits to try out on the counters and we got to work making sure the counters were ready.

The first thing we needed to do was remove the black tiles that were on the counter, and clean the surface. The tiles left a residue on the surface so we used a Goo-Gone cleaner to remove any sticky substances on the counter. Once it was cleaned, it was time to tape off any edges and put the tarp down to cover any of the cabinets and taped around other things we didn’t want to have the refinishing products to touch.

Working on updating your kitchen doesn’t have to be as overwhelming as you’d think. Even if you have an older house, updating the kitchen is something you can easily do yourself and starting with the counter is a great place to start.

After cleaning the counters, it was time for the refinishing process to start. To make sure that everything ready for the new surface after the initial cleaning, we sanded the surface to make sure that it was smooth and ready for the base coat to be applied.

The base coat of the SpreadStone system helps give your counter a level surface and to cover up any imperfections. It is easy to paint into the edges and to roll onto the rest of the surface. Each step of the process has a work time and a wait time between working and the next step. This allows each layer to dry completely – so make sure you read the instructions as you go along.

With the counter cleared of any imperfections and the base coat applied you can already see the counter coming to life. The ugly counter top is already gone and just a bad memory and we were almost temped to stop there. The difference was amazing and we were only partially done with the process.

The next step is to apply the new counter surface. It’s the similar process as the base coat. We started by painting the edges and more detailed areas and rolling on the rest of the product. At the end of the first day we could see the new counter taking shape. But we had to let it wait and rest until the next morning.

After the counter has dried and cured over night, it’s time to finish it. Before you apply the final sealing product you have to sand the new counters. It’s when you do this you can see the flecks and stone details start to come out on the counter. This is where it starts to look like a poured counter surface instead of a painted counter and the different stone flecks throughout the counter gives it its own individual look and custom appearance.

The last step of the refinishing project is sealing the new counter. This will need to set up again over night before you use the counter but this is almost where the magic happens as well. As you roll on the sealant you will see what your final counter will look like. The shine on the counter is amazing and its easy to apply.
