As many feel good sports movies as there are out there, its about time that we’re getting some that have positive role models for young girls who are into sports. Alex & Me partners young actress Siena Agudong with professional soccer player Alex Morgan in a heartfelt film that not only brings positive message for young sports fans but a fun movie to watch. We sat down with Siena and asked her about her latest role and were captivated by her positivity and determination. Thanks to Warner Brothers for setting up the interview with Siena so we could share more about her with our readers.
How did it feel to get the call that you got the part in the movie?
It was so amazing. The look I gave my mom and the one she gave me was so priceless. We both looked at each other and both started sobbing. We were both so excited. I immediately started watching all of Alex’s games. I was so excited, and immediately went to Target and got a ball and started practicing.
Did you have soccer experience before you did this film?
Yes, I did play soccer before. I trained for a couple years but never was able to be on a team because I was always gone for filming. They brought in two different trainers for me, Coach Sarah and Coach Hoffman. They trained me for two weeks before the film an it really helped me.
How do you keep up with school while you’re filming?
It’s hard to keep up with school and acting. But I have to keep up my education, and good grades. I have a set tutor that helps me on set, and I also do classes online when I’m gone.
Do you have any tips for kids who may want to get into acting?
Something I learned over the years, all I want to do is surprise myself. Nothing is a mistake, just use it in your scene. Always do something different, play around with it. Be invested in it and be confident.
What was the most challenging part of the film?
Learning the tricks was the biggest challenge. There is a scene where my brother had to walk across a big road in the scene and I had to do push ups until he got there. He walked so slow, so I kept having to do push ups.
In terms of acting – where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
My goal is that I will be on a big action movie on the big screen. I’d be working along side Melissa McCarthy or the Rock or on a Steven Spielberg film.
You were interested in soccer, being active and healthy when you were younger, do you think that helped you in this role?
Yes it really did. Especially with soccer, I really like soccer. Going into the project, I was so excited to film it and it was great to do two things I love so much.
Were you a fan of Alex Morgan before working on this project?
Yes, I definitely was. And I’m still a fan afterwards as well. I’m reading her book and watching her games more than I have in the past.
Was there any advice that Alex Morgan gave you specifically that you will carry with you?
She was telling me to have confidence in myself. In a lot of scenes there were things that were hard for me to do, she was really supportive and kept telling me “Siena believe in yourself, believe in the tricks and you can do it”
You’re quite the role model for young girls, what is one thing that you want young girls to know that will help them relate to you?
I am very determined. I don’t give up, if I have a goal I do my best to achieve it.
Alex & Me is all about learning to believe in yourself, do you have any advice for young girls to help them build their confidence?
I truly believe, that if you believe in yourself you can achieve great things. To build confidence, go along with the ride, trust the process, and believe in yourself.
What is the one thing you want viewers to take away from the film?
Never stop believing in yourself. You can achieve great things. As long as you work as hard as you can you will succeed.
Teenager Reagan Willis (Agudong) has one dream – to play soccer like her hero, Alex Morgan. Her bedroom is a shrine to all things Alex, including a life-size poster of the Olympic gold medalist. Yet in the Willis house, Reagan lives in the shadow of her prep football superstar brother, Logan. When Reagan fails to make the cut of the premiere local soccer club team and is humiliated by her rival Claire, she’s certain her ship has sailed. But after accidentally hitting her head, Reagan’s poster of Alex Morgan suddenly comes to life and everything changes!
An Olympic Gold Medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion with a penchant for goal scoring, Alex Morgan is one of the top soccer players on the planet, currently playing forward for the United States Women’s National Team and the Orlando Pride of the National Women’s Soccer League. Away from the field, Morgan is also an accomplished author of “The Kicks” series, a collection of chapter books filled with wonderful messages of empowerment for young girls. The first The Kicks book, “Saving the Team,” debuted at No. 7 on the New York Times Best Seller list.
Eric Champnella (Thunderstruck, Mr. 3000, Eddie) wrote the Alex & Me screenplay and is also making his full-length feature debut as the film’s director. Alex Morgan serves as co-producer. Producers are Mike Karz (Blended) and William Bindley (Mother’s Day). Todd Williams (The Illusionist) is the executive producer.
Jerry Trainor (iCarly) also stars as Nigel, a less-than-reliable youth soccer coach, alongside Matt Cornett (Bella and the Bulldogs) as Reagan’s brother, Logan; Colin Critchley (Legends of the Hidden Temple) as Reagan’s soccer-playing pal, Ben; Chuiti Tiu (Nashville) as Reagan’s mother, Ann Wills; and Jim Klock (True Detective, Scream Queens) as Reagan’s father (and biggest fan), Joe Wills. Jessica Treska (HBO’s upcoming Sharp Objects) plays Reagan’s arch-rival, Claire.
“Alex & Me is a heartwarming film that will inspire young children to follow their dreams,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, WBHE, Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. “We think Alex Morgan fans, soccer enthusiasts, and young girls alike will fall in love with this story about hard work friendship and family.
