Child-Friendly NYC Ideas

kid friendly NYC

If you’re currently researching child-friendly destinations, then the chances are that New York city isn’t going to be at the top of your list. Most of us associate New York with thriving, busy streets, culture, traffic, noise, and pollution— so, at first glance, it doesn’t seem like there’s much in New York that could constitute “child friendly”.

However, while New York undoubtedly does some issues, there’s plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy— if you know where to find them…

Central Park Zoo

Central Park is, in and of itself, a great destination for families, but the zoo is a particular wonder that your kids are sure to enjoy. The overall complex is huge, includes its own aquarium, and is filled with fascinating insights into the animal kingdom, which allows a truly fantastic experience that your kids will never forget.

Child-friendly theater events

Theater experiences in New York are often associated with high-culture and cutting-edge productions, which you are likely right in expecting not to be particularly intriguing for children. However, alongside the high-end theater scene, there are plenty of family-friendly shows in New York that will enhance any trip. Perhaps a live-action production of Frozen would be a great choice for your kids, or a musical based on hit TV show Spongebob Squarepants? These, and many more, all make for an amazing day at the theater in New York.

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is a national treasure and, as a result, a must if you’re going to visit New York. While not an ideal choice if you have very young children, older kids will love seeing this monument close-up, and the view from the top is truly spectacular.

Walk the High Line

The High Line is a former freight rail line that has been converted into an elevated, linear parkway. Your kids will love exploring the scenery, art, and displays along the route, as well as enjoying a truly unique perspective of the city. Access is free, and you can either walk the entire 1.45 mile park or visit specific sections when you’re in the vicinity.

The delights of the American Museum of Natural History

If you’re looking to both entertain and educate your kids during your stay in NYC, then you can’t go wrong with a trip to the American Museum of Natural History. This incredible center offers a variety of experiences and covers a vast range of subjects, with special exhibits on topics such as dinosaurs, the deep ocean, reptiles, fossils, and human origins certain to enthrall your kids for hours on end. In particular, Dark Universe — which, unsurprisingly, focuses on space and the earth’s place within it — is particularly beloved of both parents and children alike.

So while New York City might not seem like a natural choice for a family vacation, the above attractions make it clear that NYC is a city that can cater to all age groups. Whether for a city-break or a week-long vacation, there’s no doubt that families should definitely consider a trip to the Big Apple.
