Chia Pet Review
Every year I see the commercials for Chia Pets and they make me smile. They’ve been around as long as I remember, and I always wanted one as a kid. But every year I walk past them at the store and never buy one. The shapes are adorable, don’t get me wrong – but I don’t know that I remember ever having one.

We’re all familiar with Chia Pets, or if you’ve ever watched TV since the 80’s (or earlier) you are. They’re a handmade pottery planter in different shapes, you add the the chia seeds on and in a couple weeks you end up with a fully grown pet. They require little maintenance, and let’s face it – they have some pretty cute shapes. We were sent a selection of Chia Pets and seeds to test out for the holidays, and we’re just waiting for the fun to begin.

This year they actually have released new shapes to the Chia Pet line including a Chia Kermit, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty, SpongeBob, Chia Gnome as well as the original Chia pet Puppy and Kitten. All come with the everything you need to get started: the planter and some seeds. Wet your seeds, put them on and fill your planter with water and in a week or two you have a fully grown Chia pet.

Each pet comes with enough seeds for up to 3 plantings, and with Kermie, you get an adorable puff of Chia Seed hair on his frog head. Be sure to put him in the included plastic drip tray so you don’t get your surface wet while watering your Chai Pet. After your Chia seeds are gone you can get more, or you can actually grow basil, alfalfa, marjoram or thyme on the same planter – so it wont just be sitting there not being used!

But what do you do with the sprouts? They don’t just have to be decoration! You can actually use them them as micro-greens in juicing, salads and more. They’re an often overlooked nutrient boost you can easily add to your diet.

This year Chia is also selling Chia Seeds – not just for their Pets! You can actually use them as an egg substitute, make your a quick and healthy pudding with them, or add them in your traditional recipes to add a boost of fiber and other nutrients. And the best part? They’re gluten free and easy to use and add in your diet. I’m going to have a lot of fun testing these out in our diet over the next few weeks!

So this year when you’re out shopping and just smile as you see the Chia Pets that we’ve seen on TV for years – stop and pick one up. Remember, not only are they adorable, but they can add some healthy greens and nutrients to your meals as you’re cooking healthier meals.
