Metro Detroit is starting to be known as a foodie mecca. A place that not only chefs are flocking to, but patrons are more aware of what goes into their food but also want options for their special diets. Thankfully, restaurants are starting to respond to this need and offering options on (and off) their menus for all types of foodies. The desire for cheap fast food seems to be waning some, and a new category of restaurant is emerging with moderately priced meals with better offerings and ingredients.
In Dearborn, one of these restaurants is Brome Burgers and Shakes. I was invited to come and have a meal and a shake as well as check out their hip and eco-friendly atmosphere. Brome Burgers and Shakes offers a completely Halal menu with selections of burgers, salads, shakes and a variety of fries. Since their online menu (or printed one) did not mention having gluten free options I actually came prepared with a gluten free bun in my purse. I was pleasantly surprised to not only have my burger come out in a toasted Udi’s gluten free bun instead of a lettuce wrap, but with freshly made gluten free truffle and Parmesan french fries. This bit of normalcy is a rare treat when eating out, especially at a large gathering with other people. I seriously hope that Brome takes the time to add the gluten free bun note on their menus and website to pick up on this local market.
There were a couple other surprises for me at Brome including an eco-friendly interior with recycled wood tables, a solar powered fan and living green walls. Probably one of my favorite features in the restaurant as far is decor was the community herb garden that not only encourages community involvement, but can be used in the recipes in the restaurant. Brome even offers outside dining options on a lit patio space, as well as branded cornhole games for patrons to play.

With organic, Halal and gluten free options Brome Burgers and Shakes is definitely reaching out to many markets at once. But they aren’t compromising on flavor or their values to do it. Their gourmet burgers are full of flavor and come in either medium or well temperatures. And to stick with being a Halal restaurant, they offer their patrons beef bacon, a leaner alternative to pork bacon. My burger was juicy, full of flavor and the fries were something I will end up craving. The prices are a bit above average compared to sit down burger places like Red Robin. However, you are getting a higher quality product without the additives and completely customize-able towards a special diet. It’s worth a couple extra dollars per person. Let’s not forget about their shake offerings too! I did try the Reeses shake which combines some of my favorite candy with an organic ice cream. It was delicious and the perfect addition to the the meal.
The Dearborn location of Brome Burgers and Shakes opened last October and is currently the only location. However, Brome is looking to expand within the next year with franchises. I can only hope they bring one closer on the East Side where a gourmet burger location that knows how to cater to special diets is dearly needed.
