It’s been a long time since a movie had me laughing so hard I was crying, but that is exactly what happened when we went to the preview screening of Bad Moms last week. While the movie is focused on modern moms, there are a lot of moments that everyone can relate to even if you’re not a parent.
Bad Moms follows Amy Mitchell (Mila Kunis) as she reaches her breaking point. From a husband who expects everything to be done for him, children who have never heard the word “No”, a job that expects way too much and no social life – Amy decides to make a change. While her initial motivation may seem selfish and some of her actions are definitely a bit over the top, it’s something that every woman would love to do from time to time. Let’s face it, society tells us we’re doing a bad job no matter what we do. From the home schooling mom, the one who does too much for her kids, the one who doesn’t get involved in her children’s lives at all – there is a mother figure that everyone can relate to and no matter what they’re all doing the best they can.
When I went to the preview screening I did actually take my boyfriend with me, and he was laughing as hard as I was throughout the movie. The movie does have a lot of crude references, swearing and ridiculous moments so keep that in mind if that isn’t your type of movie. But it was a refreshing change to see a movie with an original story made for women to sit back, laugh and relate to the character. This wasn’t a “dude” movie recreated for women, but a movie made for women – and one that all of your girl friends can relate to even if they haven’t had kids yet. The only negative I comment I have about the movie is with the exception of the main love interest, the male characters are a bit of stereotypes. However, since women have filled that role in movies since the creation of film, it’s only a minor annoyance and their roles are so minimal it wont detract from enjoying the movie.
Get the girls together, grab a drink and enjoy Bad Moms. If the movie doesn’t have you laughing until you cry, the scenes with the actors and their mothers will have you in tears. All of the Moms in the movie are actually moms, so they can easily relate to the characters they’re portraying. The movie is an overall nod to moms doing the best they can, despite what society and other judging opinions has to say.
