If you’ve ever been to Jamaica and the Bahama’s you know there is a very distinct sound, flavor and flare of the islands. It’s one that you will find yourself craving every once in a while after trip there. The warm spices and gentle heat your meals might have. I fell in love with jerk seasoning and island flavors back in college, and have even brought several home with me in our travels. But when the mood strikes me just right – I can head to our local Bahama Breeze restaurant. Right now (and until August 13th) they have Reggae Fest, focusing on the flavors and sounds of Jamaica – and they want you to come experience a little island flair.
We were invited to come sample the Reggae Fest menu as well as other dishes this weekend, and the meals did not disappoint. We were treated to a One Love cocktail made with pineapple and Appleton Rum from Jamaica, the Taste of Jamaica Platter with jerk chicken, fried plantains, rice and beans, spiced pork and even stewed vegetables, as well as Goat Curry. While many of the specialty dishes for the event aren’t gluten free, my boyfriend was able to sample them and compare them to the food we had on our last trip.
But don’t worry – there is plenty to eat at Bahama Breeze that is gluten free! The manager at the Troy location is aware of celiac needs, and the staff is very knowledgeable about the dietary needs as well as the ingredients in their dishes. Most meals can be adjusted as needed, and you wont go away hungry. I was able to enjoy a chimichurri steak, garlic mashed potatoes and lemon green beans as well as a large salad. All of the portions were huge, and we didn’t go home hungry or have a single complaint about the dishes.
Although we’re talking about Jamaican flavors and spices – there was one stand out dish of the night for my boyfriend – the key lime pie. Besides being a giant slice (really at least 2 times what I’d cut at home). It had the flavors of a true key lime pie like you get in Key West, and doesn’t use fake green coloring. He compares all key lime pies to one he had in the past, and this pie was just as good as his favorite. I don’t know that I’ve seen a smile cross his face that quick over a piece of pie in the past!
The Troy location of Bahama Breeze provides live music any night of the week, but during Reggae Fest they will have different entertainment nightly. Check out the musical line up at the location nearest you and take in some of the sounds and flavors of the islands during Reggae Fest!
They even have a fun giveaway going on now for Reggae Fest! Take in the sights, sounds, flavors and fun of Jamaica at your local Bahama Breeze, and enter here for your chance to win. They’re giving away hundreds of instant prizes, and one lucky winner will score tickets to a JamRock Reggae Cruise!
