You need the right tools to make certain foods, and until recently I didn’t have a steamer in my house. Before I would only steamable vegetables that you microwave, without the right pan I didn’t even try to do it any other way.
That is until IMUSA sent me their Aluminum Tamale and Seafood Steamer to test and review. When the steamer first arrived my first thought was it looked similar to my other stock pots, with the exception of the indentation at the bottom. The lid fit securely in and inside was an insert that allowed the steam to come up through the unit.
The steamer not only works for tamales and seafood, but also vegetables – that made me extremely happy! I’m allergic to seafood, so what was I going to make the first time in the steamer? Since we love Mexican food I decided to try making Chicken Tamales – you can
see the Chicken Tamale recipe here!
To use the steamer, you simply fill the bottom with water and put in your ingredients on top. For the tamales I lined the bottom with extra corn husks to aid in the cooking. Once the water starts to boil, you simply put the lid on and your food will steam! It was extremely easy to use and our food came out perfect the first time I tried it – I was happy about that!
After my tamales were done and I let the pan cool I did notice some discoloration from the steaming process. These stains did not go away after I washed and scrubbed the pan. I also noticed that when the pan cooled a dent formed from where grate from our gas burner is. Despite these changes to the pan, it isn’t the first time I’ve had this happen with pans. While it doesn’t always look pretty, it doesn’t change the performance of the pan in the future.
I am extremely happy with the pan and how the tamales turned out! I can’t wait to try steaming vegetables in it or making more tamales.
