Finding our own strength is something that takes most people their whole lives. For me, I found my voice early and had some hiccups along the way. But over the years, I’ve found that empowering myself means also empowering others as we go too, that by being empowered means helping out others. It helps us grow, helps strengthen us and you probably will walk away with a warm heart.
My parents had a habit of moving every 7 years when I was a kid, one they broke when I was older. But when I was about ten years old we moved half way across the state. I found myself at a new school, trying to make new friends and find my place in the social order. One girl from our neighborhood very matter-of-factly told me one day that we could be friends if I “wore my hear like her and dressed like her”. Those words have stayed with me through my whole life, and I walked away from her and her clique my whole school career. At ten years old, I found out quickly who I didn’t want to be, and what I didn’t want to be. While I still would never meet that girl for coffee, she helped empower who I am to this day. Something that easily could have been turned into a negative, my ten year old self used it as a jumping off point. I even went as far as purposely mismatching my clothes for a couple years after just to drive her nuts.
Empowerment can mean different things to different people, for me it’s knowing who you are and sticking to your guns. My voice has grown louder over the years and my responses are less passive and more vocal. I stand up for what I believe in, and I reach out to help others do the same. I think that by helping to empower others, they can continue to grow and pass on the empowerment to others.
Finding your own voice, growing into yourself, and being empowered is something we all should achieve in our adult lives. Continue to grow in yours, find your space, your voice and self and help others do the same. Very simply, taking the time to help others grow is what being empowered means to me.
Thank you for reading a story from #BehindTheBlogger Hop. Every 2 weeks a group of bloggers is given a writing prompt. These prompts are very open ended, so our bloggers can write about whatever they desire. The main rule is that their blog post directly relates to the topic of that week. The point of this hop is for our readers to get to know us on a personal level.
Please hop along and read all of the blog posts in this weeks hop. Just click the links below. If you want real and raw emotion, then you will find it here. After you read each post, please comment and share. We want to get to know you too!
